After passing through a number of owners, the city seized the property in 1933 and it was soon leased by the Kiwanis Club for 74 years. The mansion is currently available for tours.

The project was originally proposed in 1984, but funding issues pushed the start of construction until 2002. The interior of the hall is a five-tiered auditorium with advanced acoustic engineering including extensive rubber insulation of the entire structure to reduce street and subway noise.
