It was constructed after the older theatre was lost in a fire and it is the fourth theatre to stand on its site. Originally seating over 3,000 people (down from 3,600 in the previous building), a major interior remodel in 1922 reduced capacity to just under 2,000.

In 1962 low ridership caused hours to be reduced and the station was eventually shuttered in 1994. The accessible tracks and preserved platforms make this station a popular filming destination.
