Arachnophobia

Year: 1990

Genre: Comedy, Horror, Thriller

Country: USA, Venezuela

A 1990 American comedy horror film that was the directorial debut of Frank Marshall. The screenplay was written by Don Jacoby and Wesley Strick. Jeff Daniels and John Goodman starred in the main roles. The plot unfolds in a small California town, which is hit by an invasion of deadly poisonous spiders. The locals try to cope with the threat and prevent an ecological disaster. The movie was the first film released by Hollywood Pictures, a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios. The main filming took place in the town of Cambria, California, which became the prototype for the fictional coastal town of Kanaima. The initial scenes, including the tropical jungle scenes, were shot in Canaima National Park in southern Venezuela, a unique natural landscape with waterfalls, plateaus and dense forests. Some scenes were filmed at Coast Union High School in Cumbria. They involved real students and teachers, especially in the soccer game and mass action episodes. Locker room scenes were also filmed with student athletes from this school. Original methods were used to create sound effects. For example, the sound of spiders being crushed was reproduced using mustard packets and potato chips, which were stepped on by sound engineers. To simulate the rustle of spiders crawling on metal pipes, long fingernails were used to run over the metal pipes. The film combines humor, suspense and elements of a classic thriller, and has become one of the most recognizable film incarnations of the theme of phobia of spiders.
