Chapel Vitaleta

San Quirico d'Orcia

Scene where On his way to the convent, the young Benedetta stops to pay homage to the Virgin Mary.

Scene was shot Chapel Vitaleta is located in the province of Siena, next to the village of Vitaleta, on the road between San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza. The small hidden chapel is one of the most photographed churches in Tuscany and is truly a perfect gem. Framed by cypress trees on either side of the bay and surrounded by rolling green hills, it looks almost too idyllic to be real. Built in the 12th century on the spot where, according to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherdess, the chapel was owned by the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena and first appears in a document from 1590.
