The movie is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth. The story is set in a world where society is divided into factions based on personality type. The production of “Divergent” used many locations throughout Chicago to make the dystopian world of the movie vivid and realistic. Most scenes were filmed in the streets and buildings of the city, and the village of Denial was entirely set on South Wells Street along the Chicago River. The interior of the Tris family home, the austere semi-circular arena for the elimination event, the Fearless dining hall, and various other scenes were created in the Cinespace Film Studios pavilions.

Locations

  • Ceremonial Hall

    In movie

Scene where The ceremony begins, and the converts come to a table with five bowls and a knife. They each cut their hands and drop a drop of blood into the bowl, symbolizing the choice of faction. Tris, to the surprise of her family, chooses the Fearless, known for their warrior qualities and active lifestyle. Her brother Caleb chooses the intellectual faction of the Erudites.

    Real

Scene was shot at the Seventeenth Church of Christ the Scientist on East Upper Wacker Drive in Chicago. The selection ceremony takes place in a special setting, with the church's semi-circular design and minimalist aesthetic providing a unique backdrop for this scene. The Christian Science Church, built in 1968, even appeared briefly in the climactic battle scene in the movie Transformers: the Dark Side of the Moon. The establishment is still in operation today, allowing movie fans to visit and soak up the atmosphere of this iconic location.

Lake Michigan seems mostly dried up, symbolizing a world very different from what we know today. We see the inhabitants of the dystopian city divided into factions, this is evident even in their appearance and clothing.

    Real

Scene was shot at the corner of West Harrison Street and South Wells Street, near the Chicago River. There, the film crew was able to erect 16 temporary structures that formed the village of Denial. While this location does not resemble its modern cinematic counterpart, it still carries the atmosphere depicted in the movie.

  • testing room

    In movie

Scene where Beatrice and her brother Caleb join the other 16-year-olds on the station to take aptitude and predisposition tests for certain skills. This test determines which faction they are best suited for, and this decision will determine their future.

Scene was shot in the Equitable Building skyscraper in Chicago. The filmmakers added five doorways to the building to create the setting for the aptitude test room. The Equitable Building is a neoclassical skyscraper designed in 1935 by Ernest R. Graham, with Piers Anderson as the chief architect. Despite the cinematic transformation, the building has retained its original appearance, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of Divergent.
