It was designed by the architect Charles Garnier and commissioned by Napoleon III. The official opening was on 5 January 1875.
The interior is richly decorated with gold leaf, frescos, and marble. The building is 125 metres wide, 173 metres long and 73.6 metres high. The auditorium seats 2131 spectators and the stage, about 1200 m², can hold 450 artists. Today, the opera house mainly hosts ballet performances.
