“It was important to the film's director, Martin Scorsese, to shoot the film on historic locations, so the production team traveled to Oklahoma, the traditional lands of the Osage Nation. Before filming began, they even performed a ceremony to bless the land with members of the Osage Nation. The ceremony was attended by the cast and production team of the movie.
The events of the film take place in the town of Fairfax, but the town has changed a lot since the 1920s, which appear in the film. Therefore, the main shooting was carried out in the neighboring town of Powhuska.
The creation of the sets was truly monumental. About 50 locations were used, some structures were decorated and others were built from scratch. The former depot of the town of Powhuska was used to create the train station, 1200 feet of track was laid there, and the team found a vintage locomotive to convey authenticity. The home of main antagonist William Hale was built on the Hughes Ranch, which is located near Bartlesville. And the shelter of Molly Kyle was erected in the village of Grey Horse.
Some scenes were filmed in the city of Tulsa. And the only location outside of Oklahoma was the territory of Cardinal Hayes High School, which is located in the Bronx, New York. A radio show, a scene from the movie's finale, was filmed there. ”
