It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the English Baroque style and was the tallest building in the city from its completion in 1710 until 1967.

Starting in 1908 with a Perrier sign the intersection has been surrounded by distinctive illuminated signage giving it a distinctive Times Square feel, though now that has been reduced to a single building on the northwest corner of the circle. Originally situated in the center of the circle but moved as the roads changed, the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain was constructed in 1892 to commemorate Victorian politician Lord Shaftesbury.

At the north end of the square is the National Gallery and underneath it is Charing Cross Underground Station.
