The majority of the film was shot at a studio in Prague, as well as in medieval Gothic castles and the Invalides complex. Some exterior views of the castle were filmed in scenic locations in Romania and small towns in Germany.

The camera gradually speeds up as it gets closer to the castle, capturing its details - the lancet arches, tall towers and massive walls. Finally, it moves into a spectacular close-up, revealing the castle in all its grandiose beauty and making the viewer feel its monumentality and mystery.
