Where was Runaway Train filmed

Runaway Train

Year: 1985

Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Thriller

Country: USA

This American action thriller film by renowned Soviet (!) director Andrei Konchalovsky was shot in California, Montana and Alaska, with most of the train scenes filmed in Alaska on the Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railroad. The prison scenes were filmed at the Old Montana Jail, which is now a museum and visitor center. There were no real inmates in the prison scenes, and about 200 extras were used to portray the chaos of the correctional facility. During filming, the film team realized they were missing snow (due to the unnaturally warm spring) and decided to incorporate artificial snow used on the Christmas tree. After they shot the initial part of the prison scenes, the cast and crew moved to Whittier, Alaska to shoot the train scenes. The train crash was filmed using mini-models at an abandoned ranch in California.

Locations

  • Prison

    In movie

Scene where Warden Ranken makes derogatory remarks, calling Manny an animal rather than a human being, not realizing that the entire prison can hear this. This speech causes an uprising in the prison, where the inmates shout, “Hear that shit, Ranken! Somebody shoot that bastard. Manny for president!”

    Real

Scene was shot at Old Montana Penitentiary, which is one of the oldest correctional facilities in the state. Built in the late 19th century, it has long served as the region's main prison and was used to hold particularly dangerous criminals. Throughout its history, the prison has survived numerous riots, escape attempts, and dark pages in the state's criminal annals. Today, Old Montana has ceased to fulfill its original functions and has become a museum that attracts tourists and history buffs. Here you can see old cells, administrative offices and the prison yard where prisoners once walked.

  • Railroad station

    In movie

Scene where Buck and Manny are on the run and approaching a railroad station. Looking around, they cannot find a way to escape the police. Suddenly Manny sees a train pulling out of the railroad station and decides that they need to get on that locomotive. Buck and Manny run toward the train while simultaneously trying to find shelter. Thanks to the blizzard, they manage to get on the train unnoticed.

    Real

Scene was shot on the Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railroad in Anaconda, Montana. Despite the consonance with the tropical snake, this place has nothing to do with exotic reptiles. Anaconda is a small town in the northern United States, located in the state of Montana. It was founded in the late 19th century and quickly became an important center of the copper smelting industry due to the proximity of large copper deposits. Despite its industrial history, Anaconda is surrounded by scenic mountains and forests, making it an attractive destination for tourists, outdoor enthusiasts and filmmakers looking for authentic American scenery. The Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railroad, which runs through the town, adds to its Old Wild West atmosphere and preserves the spirit of an era when railroading was the backbone of American progress.

  • Railroad track

    In movie

Scene where a train operator calls the central control room and is answered by Frank Barstow. The operator asks Frank, “Why did you stop us?”. Frank replies: “There's a runaway train coming at you” and then instructs the train to move to another track. The driver after a time realizes the urgency of the situation and begins to move his train to track 2. Unfortunately, he does so at a snail's pace, and the out-of-control train crashes into the last car.

    Real

Scene was shot at a winery in the town of Rancho Cucamonga. There, the crew and producers were able to recreate the scene using miniature trains. The abandoned winery was perfect for filming the crash of the two trains with the ensuing mini explosion, smoke and wreckage.
