Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

Year: 2017

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Country: Bolivia, Croatia, Iceland, Ireland, United Kingdom

The eighth episode of the iconic space saga directed by Rian Johnson. The film continues the story of the confrontation between the Resistance and the First Order, bringing back to the screen favorite characters played by Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Andy Serkis. Filming took place in various scenic corners of the planet, giving the fantastic narrative a spectacular realism. One of the most memorable locations was Skellig Michael Island off the southwest coast of Ireland, depicting the secluded planet of Ahch-To, Luke Skywalker's sanctuary. Its ancient beehive-like stone monastic buildings fit perfectly with the spirit of Jedi silence and detachment. Additional scenes were filmed on the Dingle Peninsula, in the Seabeal area, where elements of the island's landscape were recreated, surrounded by picturesque cliffs and the Atlantic. The contrast to the wild nature of Ireland is Dubrovnik (Croatia), which became the prototype of the planet-city Canto Bight - the center of luxury and gambling. Narrow streets of the Old Town, marble pedestrian street Stradun and historical architecture were used for filming scenes with persecution and internal intrigue. Equally impressive was the Salar de Uyuni salt desert in Bolivia - the largest in the world, with a dazzling white surface. This is where the key battle on the planet Crate was filmed, where the salt crust under a layer of red dust creates an ethereal visual effect. Thanks to the careful choice of locations, The Last Jedi is not only spectacular, but also geographically diverse, enhancing the sense of authenticity of a galaxy far, far away.

Locations

  • A rock on the planet Ech-To

    In movie

Scene where Rei's first lesson with Luke is an important moment in her training. Luke helps her focus on feeling the Force and understanding its balance. Rei begins to feel the energy around her, sees images and even picks up small rocks, experiencing a deep connection to the Force for the first time. However, during her meditation, she feels drawn to a dark crevice on the island. Despite Luke's warning, Rei does not resist and allows the Force to take her into the depths.

    Real

Scene was shot at Sybil Head, located on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. To bring the scene to life, the crew built an elaborate set of the First Jedi Temple. Unfortunately, fans visiting the location today will not find these structures as they were temporary for filming.

  • Planet Crate

    In movie

Scene where Holdo notices the Excellence destroying the rescue ships and makes a drastic decision. To save the others, she aims her cruiser directly at the First Order flagship and performs a hyperspace ram. The impact rips the Excellence in half, allowing the Resistance transports to reach cover, Rey to escape Snoke's ship, and Finn and Rose to escape execution. Shortly thereafter, Finn engages Captain Phasma in combat, and she perishes by falling through the ruined floor after the explosion. With the support of BB-8, Finn and Rose manage to reach the old rebel base on the planet Crate.

    Real

Scene was shot at the Uyuni salt marsh, the world's largest salt plateau, located about 160 kilometers southwest of the city of Potosí in Bolivia. It covers about 10,000 square kilometers on Bolivia's Altiplano in the highlands of the Andes.

  • Planet Ech-To

    In movie

Scene where Rey, accompanied by Chewbacca and R2-D2, arrives on the remote planet of Ech-To. They land aboard the Millennium Falcon, searching for the legendary Luke Skywalker. Climbing the ancient stone steps, Rey finds Luke and silently holds out his old lightsaber to him.

    Real

Scene was shot on Skellig Michael Island, a majestic rocky island in the Atlantic Ocean, about 11.6 km off the coast of Ireland, west of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. The name Skellig is derived from the Irish sceilig, meaning "rock". Skellig Michael has important historical significance - an early Christian monastery existed here from the 6th to 12th centuries. The monks built beehive-shaped stone dwellings and prayer rooms, placing them on one of the terraced areas of the slope. The island was abandoned by the monks around the 13th century, but the well-preserved structures are still considered a unique example of early Christian architecture. Skellig Michael was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Due to its isolation and pristine appearance, it was chosen as the location for the filming of the planet Ech-To in the movie.
