Where was The Chase filmed

The Chase

Year: 1994

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Romance, Thriller

Country: USA

The movie is set in Los Angeles, but the entire movie was actually filmed in and around Houston, Texas. Director Adam Rifkin explained that closing entire stretches of Los Angeles freeways would have been impractical and too expensive for the film's budget, so they chose a less congested and cheaper stretch of road. Interestingly, they hardly closed any roads and even had Charlie Sheen and Henry Rollins do all the stunts themselves during rush hour in Houston. It was a bold move that more than paid off, as the chase looks very realistic. The production chose several different Houston highways to try and add variety, but a couple of sharp-eyed Houstonians on Reddit noticed Jack and Natalie driving past the same oval building over and over again throughout the movie, proving that they were doing laps on the ring road that encompasses Houston. Obviously easier to film, but not very convincing if the plot had the characters traveling toward Mexico.

Locations

  • Police station

    In movie

Scene where at the police station, it becomes clear that a millionaire's daughter has been kidnapped. Therefore, the police are under enormous pressure to find Jack and quickly put him on trial. All forces become directed to catch the criminal.

    Real

Scene was shot in a real-life Houston Police Department building. Why set up a set or use a studio when you can access a real working facility, right? Since it's a functioning police building, you can just go in there as a movie buff and take a couple of pictures.

  • Road

    In movie

Scene where After running away from the store with Natalie, Jack takes to the freeway with a whole bunch of police cars on his tail. To be honest, at this point he has no idea what to do next - kidnapping was definitely not in his plans, so we see Jack start to lose his mind.

    Real

Scene was shot on Sam Houston Road. This ring road wraps around the city of Houston in a loop and has some notable buildings on the side of the road, which is exactly what Reddit users have identified. Since it's a highway, the best way to visit it is to drive it yourself. Grab a friend - with their consent, of course - and hit the road.

  • Store

    In movie

Scene where Jack makes the impulsive decision to take a random customer of Natalie's store hostage. The cops are armed, of course, and point their guns at Jack. Then he grabs Natalie, orders them to put the guns on the ground and kicks them at him.

    Real

Scene was shot in the city of Kemah, Texas. Located on Galveston Bay, it is a popular tourist spot known for its great fishing and sunny beaches. It was also where the final scene of the movie was filmed.
