It became the Mulholland Dam in honor of William Mulholland. He was the General Manager and Chief Engineer of the Bureau of Water Works and Supply at the time of the name change. The dame was designed to hold the water in the Hollywood Reservoir.
The dam played an important role in the 1974 disaster film Earthquake.
