Kaidanovsky created his film using a variety of locations in the Kaliningrad region. In total, filming took place in nine localities of the region, from which the director formed a collective image of the city of 1953. Absurdist and grotesque scenes, imbued with an atmosphere of mysticism, were filmed in Kaliningrad, which in the movie was given the fictitious name of Bonyavsk. The Kaliningrad locations in the film emphasize its unusual and mysterious atmosphere. The characters appear at the tomb of philosopher Immanuel Kant and the ruins of the Cathedral on the island of Kneiphof, which in those years was in disrepair. Much of the filming took place in the town of Gvardeysk, where the Tapiau Castle - a picturesque and majestic structure that appears in key episodes of the movie - stands out. However, the central location was the town of Polessk, which was used more often than others. The scenes shot in Polessk take up most of the screen time and are full of vivid details. Each location plays an important role in creating the fictional world of Bonyavsk, interweaving real historical places with fiction.

Locations

  • City Executive Committee Building

    In movie

Scene where The old partisan Vasily Petrovich Dobrynin stands in the pouring rain and is clearly up to something. His eyes read determination and pain. Passing through the fountain, he reaches the building of the City Executive Committee and smashes the window of the institution with a stone.

    Real

Scene was shot in Kaliningrad, in a public garden on Prospekt Mira, next to the modern building of Kaliningrad State Technical University. The centerpiece of the scene was a famous work by the animal sculptor August Gaul, nicknamed “bulls” by the locals. This composition symbolizes the eternal struggle of kindred creatures - close in spirit and nature. The sculpture seems to set the tone for the whole painting, filling it with a deep philosophical subtext.

  • Gypsy camp

    In movie

Scene where a group of guards in snow-white uniforms disperse the local gypsies. The Gypsies, noisily indignant, run away in different directions. There are shouts in different languages, mixed with angry reproaches and pleas. Women clutch their children, men wave their arms as if trying to protect their families.

    Real

Scene was shot on Naberezhnaya Street in the town of Polessk, Kaliningrad Oblast. For greater authenticity, local Gypsies participated in the mass scenes. However, the buildings that served as a backdrop for these scenes have not survived to this day - they were demolished almost immediately after the filming process was completed.

  • Ruins

    In movie

Scene where a thief sitting on the balcony of an abandoned building conducts a rather interesting kind of fishing - he hooks the hats of passing city dwellers. This time his victim was an investigator. Not the most successful target for hunting, because the investigator has the hardening to find such crooks.

    Real

Scene was shot on the ruins of the East Prison Ragnit in Nemunas, which was destroyed during World War II. These massive brick walls, overgrown with moss and grass, preserve the memory of its history. Today, these ruins remain a reminder of the past, attracting historians, travelers and filmmakers looking for unique locations.
