The building was designed by architects Eugenio Cendoya and Enric Catà in a Spanish Renaissance style. An extensive renovation and expansion of the building occurred between 1990 and 2004 adding an additional 15,300 square meters to the building to house the museum's extensive collection.

Scene was shot The two small buildings at the entrance to Park Güell for the Porter's Lodge. The one to the west was the actual lodge containing a waiting room and telephone booth, while the east structure, now know as Casa del Guarda, was the porter's residence. Both structures were designed by Antoni Gaudí and feature intricate trencadís tiled roofs. The gate between the two buildings is not original, but was relocated from Casa Vicens, another Gaudí-designed building when it was renovated in 1925.
