Successively as Greenwich Hospital, it was a retirement home for former sailors of the Royal Navy until 1869, the seat of the Royal Naval College from 1873 to 1998, and a campus of the University of Greenwich since 1999 and the Trinity College of Music since 2000. The structure is thereby referred to as the Old Royal Naval College. The complex has been part of the World Cultural Heritage since it was added to the World Heritage List.

The Temple of the Four Winds lies on the grounds of Castle Howard at the eastern end of Temple Terrace, commanding stunning views across the hills It was designed by Vanbrugh but remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1726; the interiors were finally decorated in 1738 by the stuccoist Francesco Vassalli. The temple was originally used as a place for refreshment and reading, beneath it is a cellar where servants prepared the food they served to the family above.
