In 1850 the land was turned into a proper park and in 1889 the arch was constructed to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration designed in the style of the Arc de Triomphe. The fountain in the middle of the park was built in 1852 and extensively renovated in 1934.

A fire in 1939 destroyed most of the buildings. The temple has undergone many repairs and renovations, and is now once again a large, thriving complex. The reconstruction efforts are ongoing even today. The Buddha statue at the temple is 23-meters high.
