At the south end of the park stands the famous Flatiron Building marking the start of the Flatiron District.

In 1850 the land was turned into a proper park and in 1889 the arch was constructed to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration designed in the style of the Arc de Triomphe. The fountain in the middle of the park was built in 1852 and extensively renovated in 1934.
