Where was Christmas with the Kranks filmed

Christmas with the Kranks

Year: 2004

Genre: Comedy

Country: USA

Most of the scenes of the Christmas family movie were filmed on the sets of three prominent California movie studios. The bulk of the filming took place at the former Boeing aircraft plant in Downey, California, known as Downey Studios, which is only 15 miles from Los Angeles. For 12 weeks, production designer Garrett Stover and construction coordinator David Elliot created one of the largest exterior sets for a movie. This 700+ foot set included 16 homes, five of which became prime locations: the Crank, Becker, Fromeyer, Shale and Trogdon homes. The first floors of the houses were fully finished and visible to the audience. Scenes depicting Nora Crank's visit to the supermarket were filmed at Cordon's Ranch Market, located in Glendale. All of these locations serve as the backdrop for the picturesque snow-covered Midwestern U.S. street that is the main setting of the movie.

Scene where Luther and Nora, who have just escorted their daughter Blair on a Peace Corps assignment in Peru, visit a grocery market. As Luther gets out of the car, he is unexpectedly and comically sprayed by a passing car.

    Real

Scene was shot on New York Street at Universal Studios. This location has been used in countless productions over the years because of its ability to transform and adapt to different production requirements. The street is curved at both ends to create the illusion of a longer street on camera - quite a clever trick!

    In movie

Scene where Luther and Nora are having lunch in an Irish pub. Nora expresses her displeasure at their decision to boycott Christmas. She says that because of his decision, she is under pressure from friends and acquaintances. Luther responds by giving Nora a swimsuit and taking her to a tanning studio.

    Real

Scene was shot at the Pasadena Hamlet Restaurant, which operated from 1967 until it closed in 2014. After it closed, Dupar's Restaurant and Bakery opened in that location, which also closed during the pandemic.

  • The Crank family home

    In movie

Scene where Luther and Nora decide to boycott their usual Christmas festivities. After calculating that they spent $6,132 during last year's holiday season, Luther proposes breaking tradition. Instead of celebrating Christmas without their daughter, who is away on a Peace Corps assignment, they decide to spend the money on a ten-day cruise in the Caribbean.

    Real

Scene was shot in one of the 16 houses on the Downey Studios property that the crew built especially for this movie. This street, full of winter charm, became the centerpiece of the film, reflecting the atmosphere of a traditional Midwestern Christmas. Downey Studios, located on the site of the former Rockwell International plant, has an interesting history. The plant was known for assembling orbiters for the Space Shuttle program and vehicles for the Apollo program. The studio was also used for major films such as Iron Man, Zodiac, Indiana Jones, and Terminator 3.
